Autumn de Forest and Aussie Hair Care Team Up for Wynwood Walls Mural in Miami
Autumn de Forest may not yet be in college, but her paintings are already larger than life. She's shown her art in major museum and gallery exhibits, joined the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities at then-First Lady Michelle Obama's request, and started the Autumn de Forest Foundation to help bring art programs back to schools in need. (Is there any doubt why she's a member of our 21 Under 21 class of 2017?) But the artist's newest project isn't just larger than life metaphorically — it's literally larger than life. Because where do you go when you're an artist at the top of your game? Miami's famed Wynwood Walls, of course.
The 16-year-old game changer recently teamed up with Aussie Hair Care to dream up a mural inspired by the brand's Purple Lining initiative. The aim was simple: design a mural that celebrates the colorful side of life. So she and her team set out to collaborate on what would ultimately be Autumn's first-ever mural. Filled with reds, blues, and purples, the design features vines and roses bursting out of an Aussie Hair Care bottle and a prompt that viewers should "Be the color you wish to see in the world." Autumn even got the tree in front of the wall involved by wrapping its trunk and painting its cover, and filling its leaves with artificial blooms. Topping off the aesthetic were drippy paint strokes that go perfectly with an umbrella prop should you want to pose for the 'gram in front of the wall.
"The Purple Lining is about spreading positivity and just being able to have this light that you carry with you in your life, and the mural, I think, really embodies that," Autumn told Teen Vogue at the project's official unveiling on August 24. "[It's about] having the courage and the freedom to express yourself in whatever outlet you are the most passionate about."
Jenny Schnell, the assistant brand manager at Aussie, agrees. "As a haircare brand with a mission to bring the play back into beauty, Aussie is looking toward the next generation for inspiration on sparking playful and purposeful positivity in the world," she told Teen Vogue. "Finding the Purple Lining is Aussie’s take on life and encouragement to everyone to find the #AUSSome in anyone and anything. The goal is for women to share what their Purple Lining is and to encourage others to spread positivity by doing the same."
For Autumn, the purple lining is art itself — and Aussie is committed to supporting her work. Proceeds from Friday's pop-up shop at the mural went to the Autumn de Forest Foundation, which she started after she began to lose touch with the kids she met from her work with the President's Committee. "I wanted to check back like, 'How are you doing? Have you painted any more?'," she remembers after telling Teen Vogue about specific painting she still remembers from her visits with students around the country. As she explains, the foundation is "an online marketplace for these kids to express themselves and be recognized for their creativity," geared specifically so that students's family and friends can purchase their artwork and support their goals.

Winter Hair Care Tips for Natural Hair
Consistency is the best way to see results in your hair. Natural hair takes more maintenance. It's more than going to the salon weekly/biweekly or having in braids consistently, or wearing sew ins, you need to be aware of the time you'll need to set aside to get the results you want to see.
"Since I started my transition I've used shea moisture, because that's the only brand I knew about at the time. I used the coconut and hibiscus line, the shampoo and the conditioner for wash, and after the styling products such as the style milk and the curl enhancing smoothie, you need your hair to air dry before going outside due to the cold," said Walki Perez, a Dominican criminal justice major from Queens.
Perez says trying out new and different brands of products work best for her during the winter. "I've recently used Carol's Daughter, I like it but I don't stick to just one brand during this time of the year, your hair gets used to it and then it just doesn't function well," she said.
Perez decided to go natural in January 2017. "My hair still curled, nut some of them would just stay straight; I decided to go natural to see my hair's full potential and repair all of the heat damage," she reported.
"When I went the first few months without heat my hair really changed, then I cut my hair in July and that's when I really started seeing change," said Perez.
She expressed that no matter the time of the year, and especially in the winter, it is important to always trim your hair and keep in mind your hair's health, over length.
Don't dry your hair with a regular towel, the cotton will soak the moisture from your hair. "Drying your hair with a t-shirt or a microfiber towel during your routine will help your hair keep its moisture especially in the winter," said Perez.
"Deep conditioning is important!" said N'aia Anderson, an African American Communications major from Queens.
"You can either make your own deep conditioner watching YouTube videos, or you can buy one and see if it works for your hair," said Anderson.
Perez showed the same sentiments, "You basically just do your regular shampoo routine, if you want extra moisture you could use a conditioner, detangle your hair, wash everything out, and then put the leave-in conditioner product on your hair for about 45 minutes," she said.
Learning how to train your curls and the shingling method will be useful when dealing with frizz and shrinkage during the winter.
"I also do a lot of hot oil treatments and moisturize my scalp more in the winter because my hair gets very dry," said Anderson. Any hair oil will do the trick.
"Get into sleeping with a bonnet," said Anderson, she explained it's the easiest way to put your hair down and just shake it out in the morning.
"In the winter it is also easier to just do protective styles to not damage your hair, such as braids, and updos," said Perez.

10 simple ways to take care of your hair in this heat
The mercury is soaring, and so is the worry for women--how to maintain a style statement, and not spoil our hair in this heat? Figuring out how not to lose the cool with open hair this summer is a big deal, and we have the perfect answer for you.
We spoke exclusively to celebrity stylist and hair expert, Priscilla Corner--a State-Registered Senior Hair Dresser with the Hair Council of UK, and a consultant at June Tomkyns in Kolkata. Corner showed us some very easy ways to take care of your hair in this summer heat.

1. Washing your hair is a must: Increase the number of washes in a week. It will avoid accumulation of sweat on the scalp, and keep your hair clean and shiny.
2. Choose the right shampoo: Use a shampoo that addresses the problem of sweat, and does not strip your scalp. You cannot have a good building if the foundation is weak, so you have to have a strong scalp to maintain good quality hair.
3. Shampoo to suit the purpose: Use moisture or hydration shampoo and NOT creamy or heavy shampoo during summer.
4. How to use conditioners: The trick is to mix water with conditioners and use a little diluted version. It will not make hair feel heavy yet keep it moisturised.

5. Oiling is a must: Use light weight oil only for summers. For example Keo Karpin, Emami hair oil or Almond oil will give strength to scalp and hair. Your grandparents still have lovely hair due to oiling of hair regularly, and some traditions are actually going to help you maintain beautiful hair.
6. Aroma reduces stress: So take a break on your weekly-off, and spend some time oiling your scalp with scented oil. Aroma works wonders because the oil will go away and fragrance will stay.
7. Do not touch: People who have frizzy hair should avoid touching there hair too much. The more you comb your hair, the more you turn it into a ticking bomb. Coconut oil when applied on frizzy hair for two to three hours eases the frizz.

8. Losing sleep over hair loss: Two drops of rosemary essential oil is a fabulous recipe when mixed with regular oil of your choice. Apply it on your scalp only, and you'll have a stress-free and rejuvenating sleep.
9. Right time for a hair cut: The hair grows faster in summer making it the perfect reason for you to chop the crop. There are more split ends due to tying of hair, and pinning up too--the hair cut avoids this for sure. A hair cut can change how you look in the same attire, giving you an easy makeover.
10. Hair spa time has come: Just as your body needs nourishment, the hair deserves it as well. So find time out this weekend and engage yourself in a relaxing spa.
Do not wait for a weekend to get a hair massage from your loved ones at home. The good 'champi' is a miraculous way to de-stress and heal naturally.

Hair care: the salon wagon taking the stigma out of fitting a wig
hen clients of Demitri Jones, a former manager at the Cobella hair and beauty
salon in Selfridges, expressed concern at wearing a wig in public for the first
time, he would take off his badge and walk around the store with them to
convince them that they looked natural.
“We would walk around and I’d say: ‘Look, no one is looking, no one notices, we’re just blending in with everyone around us,’” says Jones. “Katy Perry and Beyoncé wear so many different wigs, it has completely taken away any stigma associated with wearing one, but people are still worried.”
Jones, a stylist with 15 years’ experience specialising in wigs and hair extensions, has worked for celebrity clients and fashion weeks in New York, Paris, London and Milan, and has appeared on ITV’s reality show Models, Misfits and Mayhem, but he says it is his work with people with cancer and others who have hair loss that is the most rewarding.

This month, with his business partner and long-term boyfriend Marc Deacon, he launched Wigz on Wheelz, a mobile salon that specialises in hair loss. Jones travels to people’s homes or to hospitals in London and the home counties. The service caters for people with alopecia, trichotillomania – a condition in which a person feels compelled to pull out their hair – and hair thinning, and those undergoing gender reassignment.
“It is all about confidence,” says Jones. “Whether you are in a salon or a department store, if you are going through cancer treatment you are at your most vulnerable. Your hair falls out in patches. But you are surrounded by people getting blow dries and glamorous cuts.”
At Cobella, Jones worked with similar clients, but felt there was a market for a more private alternative. “We used to get hen parties and tourists coming in to look at wigs, and then you would get people who had just been through chemotherapy.”
Jones learned his trade from his mother, Lei, and her sister, Reena, both of whom were hairdressers, starting at the salon where his mum worked while he was still at school. His Aunt Reena, who died from breast cancer, wore an NHS wig, but, Jones says she hated it –”It was very poor quality.”
“There’s not a lot of help for cancer patients, in terms of where to go for hair loss,” he says, particularly when it comes to deciding whether to shave their heads. “It is a time when they have no control and the last bit of control is shaving.
“It’s not easy for anyone, no matter what age. Whether you’re seven or 70, a woman’s hair is her crowning glory, isn’t it? A young girl I went to see last week was in intensive chemotherapy. She had beautiful, thick, long brown hair. We discussed what was going to happen and whether she might want me to do it or someone in her family to do it. She was very emotional but she said: ‘I want you to do it.’ It’s a horrible thing to have to do, but I try to reassure people. I say: ‘This is not forever, this is just for now.’”

Choose The Correct Shampoo For Your Hair
Shampooing is essential to everyone's hair care routine, regardless of hair type or texture. You should shampoo as often as necessary to keep your hair looking clean and your scalp comfortable. This may range from shampooing daily to shampooing only once a week, depending on how oily your hair is, the level of physical exercise you indulge in, the environment, your hairstyle and any scalp problems. Those who have oily hair, exercise daily, or live or work in dirty environments may need to shampoo daily, while others need to shampoo less frequently.
Walk into any drug store, supermarket, department store or salon and you will be visually assaulted with vast numbers of hair care products. The choices are nearly infinite. With so many choices in a multitude of price ranges, choosing the right shampoo for your hair can be daunting.
Determining the correct shampoo
When trying to determine which shampoo is correct for your hair, you should first consider hair type. Is your hair curly or straight, frizzy or flat, fine and limp or bouncy and lively? All of these factors can be important in helping you choose the right shampoo. Secondly, you should ask yourself if your hair tends to be dry or oily. This will not only help you to determine which type of shampoo to purchase but how often you should use it. Is your hair color treated with highlights, low lights or bleaching? If so, there is a shampoo for that as well.
The skin conditions
Another factor to consider when choosing a shampoo for your hair is whether you have skin conditions of the scalp that make you sensitive to a particular shampoo. If you have dandruff, seborrhea or psoriasis of the scalp, there are actually shampoos that cleanse your hair as well as treat your scalp conditions. These shampoos can be a godsend for some consumers.
Price range
One final consideration when choosing a shampoo is price range. There are extremely low priced shampoos as well as very high end shampoos that range well into the double-digits. The fact is, with these high end shampoos you are primarily paying for sleek or innovative packaging and high level advertising. Typically, if you check the ingredients in almost any shampoo you will find the same or similar ingredients. There is not a great deal of difference.
The best idea, when choosing the right shampoo for your hair is to try a few different products that address the particular type of hair you have. Often salons provide sample sizes. Manufacturers often offer free samples on their web sites as well. Find what works best for you and addresses your particular hair needs and then stick with it.

Great African-Black Hair Care Tips

Massaging your scalp on a regular basis will stimulate oil production, which will help reduce the dryness of your hair.
Daily shampooing is not recommended, ethnic hair is dryer than other types of hair, shampooing strips away the oils from your hair so try shampooing once every 3 to 7 days instead.
If you engage in daily activities that cause you to sweat, it is recommended that you rinse your hair out with water and only use shampoo on occasion, but if you feel the need to use a mild shampoo, go ahead and do so.
Use a mild moisturizing shampoo with a low PH level when washing your hair.
Don’t use a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner, use a separate shampoo and conditioner, 2 in 1′s aren’t suited as well for dry hair.
When washing your hair rub only in one direction to avoid tangling.
Shower with warm water, hot water can dry and/or irritate the scalp.
Oil your scalp after shampooing, with your hair still moist, massage the oil into your scalp and brush out to the ends of your hair.
Use a conditioner when you shower, it’ll moisturize your hair, give it extra protection, add shine, reduce static, and makes it easier to untangle.

Baby Hair Care

As for your baby, it's okay to section the hair off and start to pinch up the hair in those sections and braid them if long enough. You can put the small hair bands around the pinched up braids, but be very careful. If your child is at the stage where she likes to pull on things, she may pull one of these off, put it in her mouth, and choke on it. When I'm out and about with our children, I always look out for other children who belong to transracial families. One of the things I do next may surprise you: I look to see if the child's skin is well taken care of and if the hair is done right. You might be wondering what I'm talking about. Let me expound on it some more. There are parents who know how to take care of their children's hair, my wife and I are an example of that. Nevertheless, there are many who do not. As a result, their child's hair becomes a hot mess, and believe it or not, this may wreak havoc on their self-image. Our goal is not to criticize but to educate the many who do not take the trouble to learn more about their child's hair care.
If your baby's hair is too short to braid right now, simply use a small amount of mild cream moisturizer on the hair to keep it moisturized. Wash the hair as often as you bathe the baby to avoid conditions such as cradle cap where there is a buildup of scales and dandruff due to not washing often. If you are following this regimen, soon you will see the hair take off to new heights. If you continually lay the baby on the one side every time she goes down for a nap, that side of the hair will never get a chance to grow and the baby's hair will be rubbed out creating a bald spot. This not only happens to black babies, but I have seen this happen to babies of other races too. Not only do you need to hydrate the hair on the outside, but you can also do this from the inside. When the body is well hydrated, not only do the internal organs benefit, but your child's skin, nails and hair benefit tremendously, and you are paving the way for successful hair growth for your baby and older children.

In order to promote new hair growth and prevent hair fall, massaging the hair and scalp with a good essential oil is a good solution. This promotes blood circulation in the scalp, thus activating the hair follicle for hair growth. You can use a mixture of essential oils prepared by combining lavender oil, olive oil, almond oil and bay essential oil for massaging the scalp. One way to prevent or slow down hair loss is to keep your hair and scalp as healthy as possible. This means eating a nutrient-rich, balanced diet. Some vitamins, such as A, B6, Folic Acid, E and C have been known to help overall hair health by improving blood circulation and collagen development.
Treating your hair gently whenever styling it is important to keeping it healthy and helping it retain length. When you style your hair be sure to comb it out slowly and gently. Before detangling put a product into your hair that provides a lot of slip. This is to help the comb slide more easily through your hair so you'll see less breakage. Use a wide tooth comb that doesn't have rough seams that will snag and cause breakage. Use appropriate products that will nourish and not dry your hair when you style it. There are many products on the market today that are made specifically for naturals. There are also many natural oils and butters you can use. Natural hair care secrets and techniques lie in taking a scientifically balanced combination of Vitamins, Minerals and other Well being Dietary supplements which have lengthy been regarded as effective for providing the best nourishment to the hair follicles and retain their vitality, natural color and the their potential for re-growth which could be misplaced due to both the interior and external causes.

Unfortunately, the hair without problems are rare.Dry hair do not reflect light, making them look dull and lacking luster. They are easily torn, confused, difficult to comb, cut by the ends. Often, dry hair - the result of improper care, rather than a consequence of reduced activity of the sebaceous glands. It is believed that the hair is well combed before washing, combing and will be better after. We recommend short hair comb from the roots, and long - with the ends, gradually moving to the roots. Wet hair is better not to comb, and if it is necessary, not metal combs, and plastic or wood. The best drying is a natural dry hair, sometimes with warm towels. Use a hair dryer is often not recommended, but if your hair requires styling hair dryer, it should be possible to use cold drying mode, holding the hair dryer at least 40 cm from the scalp.
To select a shampoo, use a simple principle: carefully read the text on the package and use the shampoo, which is designed for your hair type, and then start using the analyze results. Positive results from the use of shampoo can be considered clean hair, their lack of fat, shiny hair after drying, good raschesyvaemost and obedience, the lack of stimulation of the scalp. To understand what this shampoo does not suit you, just one-two-fold application, but in order to come to the conclusion that this shampoo is just for you - you should regularly use it for at least several weeks. In addition, a good shampoo should remove the static electricity from your hair, and most importantly - to compensate the loss of protein, moisture and nutrients. The assertion that the shampoo from time to time to be changed - Myth: If you picked yourself a shampoo that you are completely satisfied, change it to another is only in the event of changes in the state of your hair.
Hair care products of the above would be sufficient. But when we talk about leaving, we mean healthy hair with certain features, but when these features become reasonable limits and become a problem - it's time to start talking about remedies. Of all the problems with the hair dander - a problem that occurs most frequently. It is important to understand that hair care, as well as care for any other part of the body - is a life lesson. You can not look after hair a month or two and then forget about it, hoping that they are now until the end of life will be healthy. Be consistent and do not leave your hair without a care.

The best hair care products for dry hair
Hair care is a journey. Pretty profound, yep, I know, but in some manner it is. Many of us - especially me - have been looking for just the right combination of products and appliances to give us the best hair care. Shampoo, conditioners, styling appliances like flat irons, curling irons or curlers, and styling aids have all played a role in giving us the hair style we want.
For me the journey to find the perfect look has been elusive. There's just not much you can do with thin hair and a couple of well-placed and prominent cow-licks. Its just not going to happen. The quest, however, remained active into my twenties until work, girls, and outside activities took the main stage. I simply didn't have the time or internet to work on what seemed to be a hopeless endeavor. I did realize that I could do with what I had and that proper hair care products would help me greatly.
Dry hair is difficult to control after shampooing, it looks thin and rough, it is susceptible to tangles and has ends that are dry and split. It has a non-slippery feel and does not slide through your fingers. This doesn't necessarily go along with a dry scalp. However, if your scalp is dry, you may develop dandruff and your hair may become thin if the dandruff is not treated.
The main cause of dry hair is lack of sebum in the scalp, which makes the hair coarse and brittle and susceptible to damage. Poor nutrition, exposure to the sun and over use of heated appliances can also rob the hair of valuable moisture. Brushing and combing will help to stimulate the scalp and distribute existing oils to the brittle ends. The aim of a hair care regime for dry hair is to replenish oil and moisture in the hair. So, the emphasis is on conditioning. Frequent shampooing should be avoided.
A generous oil application the night before washing your hair is recommended, as this will condition the hair and scalp and stimulate the oil glands and circulation flow as well. If your hair is very dry and damaged, apply a hydrating mask once a week. Avoid vigorous drying with a towel after washing your hair, as this will remove essential moisture. Instead gently squeeze excess water from the hair and blot dry with a towel.
